See the Beautiful Wonders of the World at Grand Canyon

Carved by the Colorado River, Grand Canyon is a steep-sided gorge in the United States state of Arizona. It is largely contained within the Grand Canyon National Park - one of the first national parks in the United States. President Theodore Roosevelt was a major proponent of preservation of the Grand Canyon area, and visited on numerous occasions to hunt and enjoy the scenery. The Grand Canyon is a must-see when visiting Arizona as it is one of the world’s vast and beautiful wonders. From end to end, the walls descend more than a mile to the canyon floor and run 277 miles. Visitors flock to Grand Canyon National Park, making it one of the country’s top 10 most-visited national parks.

The area was inhabited by Native Americans who built settlements within the canyon and its many caves prior to European emigration. Considered a holy site by the Pueblo people the Grand Canyon ("Ongtupqa" in Hopi language) was made pilgrimage. In 1540, Grand Canyon was first viewed by García López de Cárdenas from Spain, the first European who arrived here. The first recorded journey through the canyon on the Colorado River was made in 1869 by Major John Wesley Powell, a one-armed Civil War veteran with a thirst for science and adventure. The sedimentary rock units exposed in the canyon was referred to as "leaves in a great story book" by Powell.
